Measuring popularity of operating systems and Internet browsers
Popularity of various operating systems or Internet browsers used by visitors of a given web site (or a group of websites) can be measured by analyzing one of the indicators, like number of cookies, page views, visits, etc. The values of popularity may, of course, substantially differ depending on the chosen indicator. For example, the popularity of MacOS X system on website comon.dk/mediamac in January 2007 calculated from number of cookies (33,88%) is much different than the one calculated from page views (50,43%). (More details on this example can be found here.)
While comparing values of statistics of different site-centric systems it is very important to realize which indicator was used for calculating the value of popularity. Popularity obtained according to different indicators can differ significantly and it should not be directly compared.
In gemiusTraffic we calculate the popularity of browsers and operating systems by analyzing cookies.
